On October 20, 1944, USS Current conducted diving operations

to save the severely damaged heavy cruiser USS Canberra

from sinking after a Japanese torpedo attack. Current's assistant

salvage officer Ensign Philip S. Criblet drowned when his air

supply was severed during shoring efforts in the

flooded engine room of the Canberra

A memorial and burial at sea was held on the morning of

October 21, 1944 from the USS Canberra. Ensign Philip S. Criblet

was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corp Medal

for heroic diving on board the USS Canberra CA-70

Philip S. Criblet was born September 12, 1914 in Sranton, Pennsylvania

to Louise Sylvester of Scranton and Paul Louis Criblet, originally of

Geneva, Switzerland. His father left the family and moved to Papeete, Tahiti

when Philip was 6 years old. Philip's school years were spent in Maryland

and in 1935 he graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore

with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

After graduation, Philip began working at Worthington Pump and

Machinery Corporation in Harrison, New Jersey. In 1938 he married

Louise H. Kraft and in 1940, his only child, Elaine Louise was born.

In December 1943, Philip enlisted in the Navy, attended Officers

Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign. After completion

of diver training, he was assigned to the USS Current as the ship's

assistant Salvage Officer.

Obituary

Kenneth D. Bryant, 70, died April 8, 2004 at his home.

He had been a resident of Jacksonville, Florida since

1970. He had retired from the United States Navy as a

Lieutenant Commander in 1975. He was also a retired

engineer from Jefferson Smurfit.

He was married to Joan (East) Bryant for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Steve Bryant and

wife Georgette of Boys Ranch, Florida, two daughters,

Jo Lynn Curtis of Lake Wales, Florida and Dee Ann

Morehouse of Waco, Texas; six grandchildren, Joshua

Steven Bryant, Sarah Rebecca Klinkenberg, Jennifer

Gail Bryant, Danielle Nicole Morehouse, Hannah Marie

Morehouse, and Margaret Caitlin Curtis; one great

granddaughter, Sydney Lauren Bryant.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa and

brother-in-law. He was a faithful committed Christian

and a member of Highlands UMC until his death. He

previously held membership at New Life Community

UMC and Avondale UMC.
